Penn State Beaver opened in 1965. The campus is on 111 acres about 30 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. Biology students and others in natural science courses take advantage of the diverse collection of trees that are planted on the campus grounds and found naturally in the 32 acres of campus woods. Additional outdoor learning areas include the campus stream, pond, wetland, rain garden, and student farm, along with 4 acres of turf being transitioned to native meadow.
