Penn State Behrend

The Arboretum at Penn State Behrend began as a 400-acre gift from Mary Behrend in 1948 and has grown to over 850 acres today. This unique property showcases many species from Asia obtained during Behrend’s extensive travels and plays host to several research-based conservation projects. In 2003, Penn State Behrend gained membership in the American Public Gardens Association. This formalized the college’s status as an arboretum, opening the way to development of public education, outreach, and research programs, as well as continued conservation of the area.
